FORMGRIDS MET PREVIEW
In what looks to be a fantastic day at the races Sat 26th Jan Met
day South Africa's best racehorse Pocket Power heads the card. At the
weights he looks very difficult to oppose and seems to have the race
at his mercy with the dark horse being the St John trained Biarritz.
However Biarritz is known from time to time to run a complete
indifferent race as was demonstrated in the Champions Cup where he
finished 8L behind Kildonan over 1800m, also he put his worst foot
forward at Turffontein over 2000m in the Summer Cup finishing 13L
behind the Dylan Chuna trained 4yo Strategic News (AUS), interesting
to note Our Giant (AUS) finished third making it two out of the first
three for Australian bred horses.
Biarritz and Pocket Power met in a blanket finish seven months ago
over a mile at Clairwood (left hand turn) in the Gold Challenge 600k
(GR1) WFA won by Succesful Bidder beating Pocket Power by 0.05L.
Biarritz finished fourth beaten only 0.85L receiving 1.5kg from the
older horses, Biarritz and Pocket Power met again in the July over
2200m a month later where Biarritz received 4kg and got beat 4L by
Pocket Power who was drawn (3) and Biarritz (20), as in the Clairwood
Challenge fellow 3yo Kildonan once again beat Biarittz by half a
length running true to form. Biarritz then showed his true ability by
winning the Nomads Handicap (LISTED) and the Turffontein 1800m London
News Stakes (GR 3) as well as running a good second in the Charity
Stakes (GR 2) and could turn the tables with in form record breaking
jockey Gavin Lerena aboard.
Succesful Bidder and Hunting Tower will be right there and one can
never exclude Striker on Tarry's 4yo Buy And Sell. Interesting to note
that since Pocket Power beat Silver Mist a short head in the Queens
Plate WFA (Gr 1) Dec 2006 he has gone on to win the 2007 J&B MET
(GR1) as well as The Green Point Stakes (GR2) and then returned to win
the 2007 Queens Plate. However on the other hand Silver Mist has only
managed to win one race, which was the 100K Milers Stakes, although in
The Green Point Stakes where Pocket Power won Silver Mist, was seventh
only 2.5l behind. They met again in the 2007 Queens Plate where Pocket
Power once again won beating Silver Mist by 5L, so UK champion jockey
Jamie Spencer will have an impossible task to turn the tables.
