Matchett
At
Scottsville on Sunday 27/05/2007,
ex-Zimbabwe Champion racehorse trainer
Paul Matchett showed just what
he can do.
In the R350K Allan Robertson
Fillies Championship (Grade 1), his 2 year old filly, Kiss for Kate
ran a great second to Rat Burana (BRZ), touted as the best 2 year old
filly in the country.
Then in the next race on the card,
the Gold Reef Resorts Medallion (Grade 1) for 2 year-olds, his charge
Golden Music runs third, beaten by less than half a length by the well
bred stallion prospect Seventh Rock (AUS) and the Woodruff runner,
Argonaut.
When I stop to think about it, the only conclusion I come to is
this - if this man had a big owner or backer, his ranking would be
right up there with the very best of South Africa’s trainers.
Paul, together with assistant Darren McConkey and the team have
achieved incredible results from limited stock or what we would call
“cheapies” - Tiza, Let's Rock 'n Roll (ZIM), Mzwilili, and
Rosinante, to mention a few.
