huge heart; this filly refuses to be beaten. It's not often that you
see five from five.
With her last two races in the strongest company, Dane Julia
has done her owner proud by winning the level weight S.A Fillies
Classic Gr 1 for 3 yolds at Turffontein over 1800m.
The pressure of turning down huge cash offers from overseas buyers,
just to keep the horse racing in South Africa must have been
tremendous, but owner Mr. Homan stuck to his guns.
The gallant filly had the lead halfway down the straight with
Sean Tarry’s somewhat unlucky runner, Angel Flight ridden
by Brett Smith having to work to get to her, and it speaks
volumes for Angel Flight that she got to a head behind Dane
Julia in the final strides of the race. This was a great training
feat by her trainer, Buddy Maroun, who says the filly does not
show much at home.
The quietly-spoken trainer at one stage had a stranglehold on all
sprinting races in Gauteng, from limited stock, I might add. No one
can earn money from average horses like Buddy, keeping them sound and
racing several times a month. I can clearly remember how the results
he achieved silenced his critics; Buddy has the unorthodox method of
running his horses more often than the average South African trainer.
Buddy has also had his share of winners over ground and enjoyed great
success with popular owner Andre Macdonald a few years back.
His feats with Golden Loom, defying the handicapper, are
legendary.
