...showed just why he is South Africa’s champion apprentice jockey
in the 10th race at Turffontein today. Gavin expertly balanced
Sydney’s Boy in the final stages without sacrificing momentum and
that was the difference between winning and losing.
The race looked sewn up for the 4yold gelding, Shoot For The
Moon, with 300m left to run, as Johnny Geroudis had skipped
clear on the Alex Laird runner and wasn’t stopping.
Meanwhile, the Lucky Houdalakis trained 4yold gelding,
Sydney’s Boy was far behind and had to be moved out of from behind
runners for a run. Then Gavin got to work! Sidney’s Boy responded and
made good headway. With 150m left to race, only Sydney's Boy had
a hope of catching the well clear leader, Shoot For The Moon
and just when it mattered most, Gavin used jockeyship by picking up
and balancing his mount to go on and win the tenth race yesterday in
the final strides.
